Abstract. The article focuses on the current accelerated development of digital technologies and its impact on modern societies. In the current era, social and cultural structures and systems (including education) no longer follow the logic of technology evolution. As a result, technologies are evolving in the absence of the necessary knowledge and critical ability to make decisions and choices. In this context, the paper argues for the need to overcome the dominance of the instrumental-applied approach to digital technologies in education and presents a local educational experience of integrating a critical approach to ICT in initial teacher education.
